Growing up as a young woman in the seventies and loving rock and roll it would be hard to ignore the impact of rocker Stevie Nicks, as a solo artist, and as a member of Fleetwood Mac. In addition to her many contributions to the music world her distinctive way of dressing started a trend in clothing which has survived for 4 decades.
Her unique gypsy style encompasses not only her shirts with the long flowing sleeves but also her long, layered skirts with the uneven hemlines. These articles of clothing can still be found in contemporary fashion today. Many pieces in the 2010 fall collection by Ralph Lauren were reported in Elle magazine’s trend report as Stevie Nicks style.
The Night of a Thousand Stevies
Ms. Nick’s style has also inspired many fans to attend her concerts dressed up as their favorite rock goddess. An annual event in New York City is influenced by her sense of fashion too. The Night of a Thousand Stevies, usually held at a different venue every year, is an evening dedicated to her music where men and women alike dress up as Stevie based on the theme for that year. This is definitely the place to be if you want to express your love for Stevie Nicks and her clothes.
The outfits over the years changed with the albums and the tours. Stevie has worn black, ivory, and everything in between. Rumours was released in 1977 with Stevie on the cover wearing a black velvet top with chiffon sleeves and a black chiffon skirt with black hose and ballet slippers. During the Mirage tour of 1982 Stevie sang “Gypsy” wearing a pale pink 3 layered chiffon handkerchief skirt, a short blouse with full sleeves, and leg warmers with high boots.
The Other Side of the Mirror released in 1989 finds Stevie depicted in a gorgeous scarlet red dress, which once seen, will not be forgotten. Trouble in Shangri-La, released in 2001, finds Stevie wearing sheer flowing colors with brown platform boots reminiscent of the late 1970s.
